Get Into the Zone

The United States Department of Agriculture has broken the country into hardiness zones from 1A to 13B. The average, minimum winter temperatures are used to determine twenty different zones. For instance, Zone 1A has minimum winter temperatures that average -600F to -55F while Zone 13B has minimum winter temperatures that average 650F to 70F. North Florida is Zone 9A with minimum winter temperatures averaging 200F to 25F.  A general gardening book is not likely to have growing information that is relevant to our sub-tropical region. Knowing that we are in Zone 9A serves as a guide for when to start seeds, transplant seedlings, and chose perennials suited to our climate.
