GRIFFIN, Georgia -- The Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SSARE) program will be co-sponsoring a Florida organic farm tour on November 3, as part of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) International Annual
Meetings in Tampa, FL, Nov. 3-6.
The event, "Water, Food, Energy & Innovation for a Sustainable World," will take place at the Tampa Convention Center. Included with the program are a number of agricultural tours, including the Southwest Florida Organic Farm Tour. Farmers, gardeners, university researchers, Extension specialists, community organizations and other interested parties are invited to participate on the tour.
Organic agriculture has doubled in size in Southwest Florida over the last ten years. The tour will introduce participants to some of the premier organic farms in the area, featuring organic vegetable, fruit, herb and flower crops. Additionally, participants will view features of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture farms), and how to market to farmers’ markets, restaurants and institutions. A visit to a local farmers’ market offering organic produce will complement the farm tour, including a lunch featuring local, organic produce. Participants will learn organic farming techniques, including nutrient and pest management strategies.
The tour will run from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. It will include stops at Sweetwater Organic Farm, a community-supported urban organic farm and environmental education center; Gateway Organic Farm, an urban farm that became USDA certified organic in 2010; Worden Farm, an 85-acre organic farm that produces over 50 varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers; and Bridge Street Market, a farmers’ market that has helped revitalize the local community.
The tour is also sponsored by ASA Agronomic Production Systems Section, Organic Management Systems
Community, and Committee on Organic and Sustainable Agriculture (COSA). The cost of the tour is $30 until September 17 and $40 thereafter.
