St. Johns County Sixth Annual Datil Pepper Cook-Off Festival a Major Success

  • The Datil Pepper Cook-Off Festival is heading for a major success for Saturday, October 6th at the St. Johns County Agricultural Center.

    Top chefs representing St. Augustine’s finest restaurants will gather on Saturday, October 6th to compete in the 2012 Sixth Annual Datil Pepper Cook-Off Festival contest presented by the UF/IFAS St. Johns County Cooperative Extension Service. The Datil Pepper Cook-Off will be open to the public in conjunction with the St. Johns County Home and Garden Show.

    Participating chefs will be invited to create both an appetizer and an entree dish using our beloved local ‘datil pepper’. There will be a first prize award (4 awards total) for the entrée and appetizer in two judging categories: Professional Award and People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice Award division will be judged by the participating public at the Festival. Tickets for this division will be sold the day of the event. It will be on a first come, first serve basis. So come early, judging is from 11:30am – 1pm! Vote for your favorite ‘pepper’ delight. Tickets will be sold for $1 each.

    Restaurants participating in the event include: Hurricane Patty’s, Blue Bamboo, Slammer and Squire Grill (World Gold Village), Black Molly, The Groove Café, Fratelli’s Restaurant, The Spot Café, Barbeque Lane, Ned’s Southside Kitchen, Hot Shots Bakery, 95 Cordova, The Viking Café, Manatee Café, Magnolia Point Golf and Country Club and The Reef. Mouth watering, exotic datil recipes such as; Roasted Datil and Poblano Bruschetta Spread, Grilled Jumbo Datil Wings, Datil Mango Glazed Pork Chop, Bacon Wrapped Figs with Datil Pepper Tapenade, Tri-Tip Slider with Datil Pepper Lime Salsa, Crunchy Seafood Datil Lasagna, Datil Pepper BBQ Duck Taco, Datil Pepper Black Bean Tofu Chili, Datil Crab Shooters, Datil Salmon on a Stick, Pilau, Pulled Pork Datil BBQ, Ribs “Pork, Minorcan Clam Chowder, Basil Pepper Datil Lettuce Wraps, Thai Datil Pepper Chicken, Southern Spicy Datil Shrimp, Korean Style Pork Tacos with Cucumber/Datil Relish, Cajun Datil Tofu, Datil Garlic Potato Chip with Datil Ranch dressing, Datil Sliders with two types of Datil Sauces, Datil Pepper and Grilled Quesadilla, Whole Crispy Fish with Datil Pepper Glaze, Datil Jelly Glazed Chicken with Goat Cheese are on the menu.

    On Sunday, October 7th, an Amateur Datil Pepper Hot Sauce contest will be held at the Wind Mitigation building/St. Johns County Agricultural Center. A monetary $50 will be awarded to the winner. Submit as many entries as you want. Please bring in your form and sample to the St. Johns County Agricultural Center by October 5th, 5pm (office hours: 8:30-5:00pm). Winner will be announced on October 7th at the Home and Garden Show.
