Community garden growing only hostility | StAugustine.com

A new community garden on St. Augustine Beach has some area neighbors fuming over what one referred to as “an obstructive compound with an ugly fence.”

Denny Dean, a construction contractor who has lived on A Street for more than 20 years, said he’s at the end of his rope with the project, located across the street from his house, which he says has turned a public green space that he and his neighbors have used for years into an eyesore.

“We’ve gone to several City Commission meetings and expressed our feelings about the way this thing has developed,” Dean, 47, said. “And they sit there and listen to us, but then they don’t respond to us at all.”

On April 2, the commission approved the license between the city and the St. Augustine Beach Community Garden Association for the space.
