South Beach Neighbors: Community garden taking shape

The St. Augustine Beach Community Garden took another step forward with the April 2 city commissioners’ approval of the license between the city and the community garden to be located between A and First streets, on Second Avenue.

Plans are for a water well to be drilled, irrigation and a fence installed around the area. The next meeting of interested gardeners will take place at 7 p.m. April 25, at St. Augustine Beach City Hall, Building C (the old post office).


A full membership in the organization will entitle the member to the use of a raised garden bed about 5 by 12 feet, the use of gardening tools and water. A full membership is $50 for the year or $25 each six months. An affiliate membership is $10, which entitles the member to participation in community activities, such as pot lucks and “compost socials”’ and to assist in planting and maintaining a few communal garden beds.

The St. Augustine Beach Community Garden was recently incorporated into a non-profit organization with a board of directors that includes Nana Royer, president; Cathy Harris, secretary; and Dennis Collins, treasurer. Its mission is to organize interested St. Augustine Beach residents into a membership-based group that works together to perform gardening activities and create opportunities for social interaction.
